5 Days – Liwonde & Lake Malawi Safari

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer toLiwonde National Park

Arrival at Lilongwe International Airport and transfer south to Liwonde National Park. The drive introduces Malawi’s rural landscapes before reaching the Shire River corridor.

After check-in and lunch, head out for an afternoon game drive. Liwonde’s terrain consists of open floodplains, mopane woodland, and riverine forest. Elephants frequently move between woodland and riverbanks, while sable antelope and waterbuck graze across open areas.

The late afternoon light reflects beautifully along the Shire River, setting the tone for your first evening in the park.

Day 2: Game Drives & Shire River Boat Safari

An early morning game drive maximizes chances of predator sightings. Lions and cheetahs are occasionally encountered in open sections of the park, while large elephant herds dominate river access points.

Later in the day, experience Liwonde from a different perspective with a boat safari on the Shire River. Hippos cluster in deep channels, crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and elephants often approach the water to drink and bathe. The river-based safari offers close, safe viewing and exceptional photographic angles.

The contrast between land and water activities defines Liwonde’s unique appeal.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Malawi – Lakeshore Relaxation

After breakfast and a short morning activity, depart Liwonde and travel toward Lake Malawi. As you approach the lakeshore, the landscape opens to reveal vast blue water stretching to the horizon.

Upon arrival at your beachfront property, the atmosphere shifts from safari rhythm to lakeside calm. The afternoon remains at leisure — ideal for swimming in the clear freshwater, relaxing under palm trees, or enjoying views across the lake.

Lake Malawi’s water clarity and gentle shoreline create a tropical island feel despite being inland.
