Day-by-Day Details Of 8 Days—Kilimanjaro & Safari Combination
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Preparation & Mountain Briefing
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are met and transferred to your lodge in Arusha, a vibrant town set beneath Mount Meru. The air is fresh and cool compared to the plains, offering a comfortable introduction before the climb.
In the afternoon, your lead mountain guide conducts a detailed briefing covering altitude management, daily trekking schedules, hydration requirements, and summit strategy. Equipment is carefully inspected to ensure proper layering for varying climate zones—from humid rainforest to freezing summit conditions.
The evening is relaxed to allow rest before the physical challenge ahead.
Overnight Stay: Arusha Coffee Lodge / Gran Meliá Arusha
Meal Plan: Bed and Breakfast
Day 2: Kilimanjaro—Rainforest Ascent to Mandara Camp
After breakfast, transfer to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate to begin your trek. The ascent starts in dense rainforest, where towering trees, hanging moss, and occasional colobus monkeys create a lush environment.
The trail climbs steadily but moderately, allowing your body to begin adapting to altitude. Guides maintain a slow, controlled pace, emphasizing energy conservation. By mid-afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Camp, located within the forest zone.
The cooler mountain air signals the transition away from lowland humidity.
Overnight Stay: Mandara Camp
Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 3: Mandara Camp to Horombo Camp – Moorland Transition
As you leave the rainforest, the landscape transforms into open moorland dotted with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. The summit cone becomes visible in clear weather, offering a powerful visual reminder of the climb ahead.
The trek to Horombo Camp is longer and gains noticeable elevation. Your guides monitor pace and hydration carefully, reinforcing the “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) philosophy that is key to summit success.
Upon arrival at Horombo Camp, the expansive views across the Kenyan plains begin to unfold beneath you.
Overnight Stay: Horombo Camp
Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 4: Horombo to Kibo Camp – Alpine Desert
Today’s terrain shifts dramatically into alpine desert. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the landscape feels stark and lunar. The wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks stretches ahead.
The hike is steady and deliberate. Arrival at Kibo Camp in the early afternoon allows time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit attempt. An early dinner is followed by a brief rest period before the midnight ascent.
The anticipation builds as temperatures drop significantly.
Overnight Stay: Kibo Camp
Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 5: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak & Descent
Around midnight, you begin the summit push under headlamp light. The climb is steep and slow, with frequent short rests. As dawn approaches, the horizon glows softly over the African plains.
Reaching Stella Point brings relief, followed by the final stretch to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the African continent. The sunrise from the summit reveals glaciers, crater walls, and cloud-covered landscapes far below.
After celebration and photographs, descend carefully back to Kibo Camp for rest and then continue down to Horombo Camp for overnight. The descent requires focus as your body readjusts to a lower altitude.
Overnight Stay: Horombo Camp
Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 6: Final Descent—Transition to Safari
After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest zones back to the park gate. Upon completion, you receive your summit certificate recognizing your achievement.
Transfer back to Arusha for a well-earned shower and recovery afternoon. The shift from high-altitude terrain to comfortable lodge surroundings marks a clear transition into the safari phase.
Overnight Stay: Arusha Coffee Lodge / Gran Meliá Arusha
Meal Plan: Half Board
Day 7: Serengeti National Park – Classic Safari Plains
After breakfast, transfer by flight or scenic drive to Serengeti National Park. The landscape opens into a vast savannah dotted with acacia trees and granite kopjes.
Game drives begin immediately upon arrival. Large herds of wildebeest and zebra roam the plains seasonally, while resident predators—lion, cheetah, and leopard—patrol hunting territories.
The Serengeti’s scale contrasts dramatically with the enclosed mountain environment of the previous days. Wildlife viewing unfolds across endless horizons under golden afternoon light.
Overnight Stay: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti / Lemala Ewanjan Camp
Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater – Dense Wildlife & Departure
Depart early for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera that contains one of Africa’s densest wildlife concentrations.
Within a compact area, you may encounter black rhino, lion prides, buffalo, zebra, and large flocks of flamingos along soda lakes. The crater walls create a natural enclosure, concentrating wildlife into an accessible viewing area.
After a half-day crater safari and picnic lunch, ascend and transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.
Overnight Stay: Not applicable
